Few places in the world can match the setting of The Lookout Mountain Club. Spectacular mountain top views have drawn visitors to Lookout Mountain for more than a century. Thousands of tourists make the trip up the mountain each summer. They spend their day exploring Lookout’s caves, parks, and rock formations, but most depart without even noticing the quiet neighborhood and golf course that also share the land on top of Lookout Mountain.

Until now, little was known about Lookout Mountain Club. Even longtime residents and members were unaware of its extraordinary story.

The Fairyland Club and Lookout Mountain golf course both faced huge challenges from the start. Two local Chattanooga businessmen devise the plans, but a mysterious millionaire arrives with even bigger ideas for Fairyland just as work is starting.

A legendary golf course architect draws up an ambitious, world-class design, but dies unexpectedly before construction begins. Historic rains wash away early work on the golf course, which is finally completed just as the Great Depression begins. Then, the Fairyland clubhouse is lost in a bankruptcy sale, to be recovered years later.

Through the continued determination and resilience of its founders and members over the decades, Lookout Mountain Club has grown into a premier club of the South.

This book explores the entire history of both clubs, leading to the 2017 merger and resulting restorations of its gems: the Fairyland clubhouse, and the Seth Raynor golf course.

The story of Lookout Mountain Club is a story of survival, a study of recreation as re-creation.
